My class of '55 held a mini-reunion last June at Prairie du chien, on the occasion of the annual Campion Golf Tournament (June 2002). I thought I would share with you some pictures of Prairie du Chien and the old campus, currently a state correctional facility.
Regards,
George Dorsey '55
Campion - old Junior Div athletic field. Former faculty residence in
background. Seen from the Northwest corner of the old campus. Roadway in
foreground is used by security van to patrol the perimeter of the facility.
Bob Scheck, Al Meyer, Larry Armondo, Jim Mannion, Larry Lundy, Clem
Steele, Howard Gillitzer. The pure white guy is the Edmund Campion statue,
now at St. Gabriel's church. Statue used to be on the Campion campus.
Ma's - now a bake shop. We did not go inside. We heard that the
picture of George Wendt ("Cheers" TV actor) is no longer on the site.
Larry Armondo, Larry Lundy, and Bob Scheck having breakfast at
AmericInn on Monday. There had been rain, but it was starting to clear up.
Gene Korbach and wife Liz at Kabers on Sunday evening (dinner).
Coach Jim Peterson and George Braasch '54 at Kabers on Sunday night
(cocktail hour).
View of Campion from the Southwest side. Marquette Hall is visible
through the fence, still with the cross on top. To the right of the
picture is a low concrete building that holds the most dangerous inmates.
Has very bare concrete cells, we were told by Howard Gillitzer.
The old Fort Crawford hotel, awaiting remodeling or destruction, I
guess.
Campion, viewed from the Northeast corner. The Chapel is in the
center, Marquette Hall to the left behind the trees, and the power
generation building is to the right of the picture.
View of the Mississippi river from "the Island", to the West of Prairie du chien, in the flood plain. We are in front of the Villa Louis, facing the river. Some small buoys are visible on the water. This is a popular summer recreation area. Water skiing is popular.
